Identification
20cm. A distinctively coloured Triller:
- Glossy blue-black upperparts
- Narrow white supercilium and broken eyering
- Black line from base of bill through eye
- White ear-coverts, cheeks and chin
- Black wings with white wing-bars
- Black tail
- Rufous throat and underparts
- White underwing-coverts
- Dark brown eye
- Black bill, dark grey legs
Females with slaty grey upperparts and an indistinctive white chin spot. Juveniles similar to females.
Distribution
Endemic to the Northern Moluccas, Indonesia.
Found on Morotai, Halmahera, Ternate, Kayoa, Kasiruta, Bacan and Obi.
Moderately common restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Forms a superspecies with Black-browed Triller and Varied Triller.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and mangrove forests. From sea-level up to 450m.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects.
Forages in middle storey up to upper canopy.
No information about breeding.
