Identification
13–13·5 cm (5-5¼ in)
- Dull brown plumage
- Rounded head
- Fine bill
- White eyestripe
- Unstreaked grey-brown back
- Whitish-grey underparts
Sexes are alike
Distribution
Southern Europe into temperate western Asia.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- L. l. luscinioides:
- Central and eastern Europe to Iberian Peninsula and North Africa; winters to Sudan
- L. l. sarmatica:
- Ukraine and Sea of Azov to Volga and southern Urals; winters north-eastern Africa
- L. l. fusca:
Habitat
Reedbeds and marshes.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet consists mainly of insects, including mayflies, dragonflies and damselflies; including adult and larvae.
Breeding
They are generally monogamous. The 3-6 eggs are laid in a nest in reeds. There may be a second brood.
