Locustella luscinioides

Identification

13–13·5 cm (5-5¼ in)

  • Dull brown plumage
  • Rounded head
  • Fine bill
  • White eyestripe
  • Unstreaked grey-brown back
  • Whitish-grey underparts

Sexes are alike

Distribution

Southern Europe into temperate western Asia.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • L. l. luscinioides:
  • L. l. sarmatica:
  • Ukraine and Sea of Azov to Volga and southern Urals; winters north-eastern Africa
  • L. l. fusca:

Habitat

Reedbeds and marshes.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet consists mainly of insects, including mayflies, dragonflies and damselflies; including adult and larvae.

Breeding

They are generally monogamous. The 3-6 eggs are laid in a nest in reeds. There may be a second brood.
