Phaeochroa cuvierii

Campylopterus cuvierii

Identification

11.5cm. A rather dull hummingbird with no obvious field marks. Note base of lower mandible is pink, and white tips on the outer rectrices. Metallic bronze green upperparts, blue green tail, very small white postocular, green throat and breast, feathers are tipped buff giving the appearance of scales, buff abdomen, black upper mandible.

Location: Hacienda Baru, Pacific Coast, Costa Rica.

Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama.

Taxonomy

Four subspecies are recognized:[1]

  • P.c. maculicauda - Pacific slope of Costa Rica
  • P.c. saturatior - Coiba Island
  • P.c. cuvierii - East and central Panama
  • P.c. berlepschi - Coastal northern Colombia

Habitat

Moist lowland forest of scattered tall trees and coffee plantations.

Behaviour

The diet includes nectar and insects caught in flight.
