The throat is white, the bill is yellowish, and the legs are green, long toes, short tail. Sexes are similar, but juveniles are dark brown above and below, belly barring and white throat.

Identification

Distribution

India and Pakistan to Japan; the Philippines, the Sulawesi Islands, the Sula Islands, and w Micronesia.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

  • R. e. amauroptera - Pakistan and India to Assam; winters to Sri Lanka
  • R. e. telmatophila - Myanmar to n Thailand, Sumatra and Java
  • R. e. sepiaria - Ryukyu Islands
  • R. e. formosana - Taiwan and Lan-yü I.
  • R. e. eurizonoides - Philippines; vagrant to Palau Islands (w Micronesia)
  • R. e. alvarezi - Batan Islands (n Philippines)
  • R. e. minahasa - Sulawesi and Sula Islands

Habitat

Lowlands; swamps and similar wet areas in well-wooded country.

Behaviour

Nests are built in a dry location on the ground or low bush, laying 4-8 eggs.

They probe with their bill in mud or shallow water for food, and pick up food by sight. They forage for berries and insects on the ground, or clambering through bushes and undergrowth.
