Identification
12.5-14 cm.
Male
- Dark grey forehead and side of head
- White postocular plume
- Brown crown and upperparts scaled black
- Grey underparts with brownish tinge on flanks and belly, some birds from Chochabamba darker
- Dark brown eye
Female
- Greatly reduced postocular tuft
- Brown to rufous forehead and area around eye
- White belly patch
- Variable upperparts from dark brownish to olivaceous or washed rufous
Juveniles with pale V-shaped marking paralleling feather edges.
saturata has a browner back and a darker face and breast.
Distribution
Bolivia and southern Peru.
Common but difficult to observe.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies recognized:
- C. a. saturata on the eastern slope of the Andes of southern Peru
- C. a. ardesiaca in the Andes of southeastern Peru to southern Bolivia
Confusing range of plumage variation in Bolivia, probably another yet undescribed taxon involved.
Habitat
Dense undergrowth of moist montanes. Often around treefalls, old clearings and road edges.
Occurs at 800 to 1800 m, locally higher.

Breeding
Few information. Fledglings recoreded in November.
