Identification
10cm. A distinctive piculet:
- Dark grey upperparts with faint pale scaling
- Prominent white fringes to wing feathers
- Black crown and breast spotted white
- White belly barred black
- Male has extensive red tips to crown feathers
- Voice: High-pitched trill lasting several seconds
Distribution
Endemic to Peru where found in the Andes of northwest Peru in southeast Amazonas and northwest San Martin.
A locally common restricted-range species. Threatened by logging in its tiny range and classified as vulnerable.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Moist montanes with many epiphytes and tall second growth.
Occurs between 1150m and 1800m, sometimes higher up to 2500m.
Behaviour
No data on diet.
Forages in pairs, family groups or singly, also in mixed-species flocks.
Looks for food low down in dense shrubbery and up at the end of thin twigs and on vines. Hammers loudly.
No information about breeding.
A resident species.
