Identification
Long, pointed tail, yellow bill with a black ridge, olive brown upperparts with black streaks, white eyering and lores . Underparts are white to buff on the flanks.
Distribution
Costa Rica south to Colombia and Peru, and east to Brazil and north Uruguay and Argentina.
Taxonomy
Duida Grass-Finch and Lesser Grass-Finch have been split from this species.
Subspecies
Six subspecies are recognized in this species[1]:
- E. h. lucaris:
- South West Costa Rica (Térraba area)
- E. h. hypochondriacus:
- Foothills of western Panama (Volcán de Chiriquí) to Panama City
- E. h. floresae:
- Mountains of western Panama (Cerro Flores in eastern Chiriquí)
- E. h. apurensis:
- E. h. sphenurus:
- E. h. herbicola:
Habitat
Dry savanna, seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland.
