Identification

14 cm

  • Dark slaty-blue head, breast and upperparts
  • Whitish brow over black lores
  • Blue-grey flanks and clear-cut white belly and vent

Distribution

An Indian endemic, only found in the Nilgiri Hills (south of Palghat Gap) in the southwest of the subcontinent.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies recognized:

  • S. a. albiventris
  • Southern western Ghats (south of the Palghat Gap) in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, southern India
  • S. a. ashambuensis
  • Southernmost Western Ghats (Ashambu Hills), southern India

It was formerly considered conspecific with Nilgiri Blue Robin.
Formerly placed in genus Brachypteryx.

Habitat

Evergreen and shola forests near streams, also pine, wattle and tea plantations near shola forests.
