Identification
29 cm.
- Dark ashy-grey head and upperparts
- White lower rump and uppertail-coverts
- Black forehead, lores, area around eye, upper ear-coverts and chin
- Dark ashy grey wing with blackish parts of upperwing-coverts, alula and remiges
- Black tail
- Dark ashy grey throat, breast and thighs, becoming white on belly, lower flanks and undertail-coverts
- Yellow or creamy eye
Females are lighter grey and have no black on lores and side of face.
Juveniles are not properly described.
Similar species
White-bellied Cuckooshrike is paler grey and has a grey tail.
Distribution
Found on Sulawesi (Indonesia) and adjacent islands.
Widespread and common.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Forms a superspecies with White-bellied Cuckooshrike and Manus Cuckooshrike.
Habitat
Occurs in wooded areas, wooded cultivation, scrub with trees, secondary woodland and swamp-forest.
From sea-level up to 800m, locally higher.

Diet
Feeds on insects. Forages mainly in the canopy, sometimes on the ground.
