Brotogeris chiriri

Identification

20–25 cm

  • Light green with darker green wings
  • Yellowish-green underparts
  • Wings
  • Buff bill
  • Pinkish-grey legs and feet
  • Dark eyes
  • Hook-shaped bill

Distribution

South America: found in central Brazil (avoids the areas closest to the Amazon river), Paraguay, south Bolivia and northern Argentina.

Also found released/escaped in some locations, like in areas of Miami with hundreds of birds.

Taxonomy

Yellow-chevroned Parakeet has in the past been included in White-winged Parakeet

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • B. c. behni:
  • B. c. chiriri:

Habitat

Forests, grasslands, open wooded areas, tropical savanna and gardens.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes seeds and fruit and flowers.

Breeding

They nest in wall and tree holes and also form nesting tunnels in dead palm fronds. The clutch consists of 4-5 eggs.
