Euplectes afer

Identification

Breeding male

  • Black plumage
  • Fluffy yellow crown, back rump, flanks and under tail-coverts

Non-breeding male and female

  • White undersides, streaking on flanks
  • Buffy-yellow eye brow

When the feathers are not puffed out, it looks slimmer and smaller

Distribution

Africa, south of the Sahara.

There is a large population of introduced birds in Portugal

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Euplectes afer has three subspecies:[1]

  • E. a. afer
Subspecies strictus

  • E. a. strictus: narrow black nape band and all black underparts
  • E. a. taha: a broader black band and yellow feathers on the breast sides

Habitat

Flooded grassland, lakesides and reed beds, breeding in the wetter spots.
