21–24 cm (8½-9½ in)

  • Longish tail
  • Straight pale bill, with slightly decurved culmen.
  • Overall brown with white or light buff streaking on head and breast.

Similar Species

Almost identical to Straight-billed Woodcreeper but lacks rufous wing-converts, breast markings longer, more streaked and belly more tawny. Best told by voice. See vocalisations below.

South America: found from extreme south-eastern Colombia to north-eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru and adjacent Brazil. Largely restricted to the Amazon basin and its tributaries.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

This species has been moved from the genus Xiphorhynchus to the genus Dendroplex.[1][2]

The specific name necopinus was in use for this species for a long period, until it was shown that the species had first been described under the name kienerii.[3]

Habitat

Várzea forests flooded with fresh water, either permanently or seasonally, which occur along the lower reaches of rivers and around freshwater lakes.
