dont know nothing about bats but this one seemed a bit bigger than the ones i have seen before

Looks like a Noctule, or at least a blurred Noctule ;), and the behavior / description (large, flying high, location Northern England) would fit too.

Quite an impressive sight, especially if seen in daylight I guess
