Hi,
I'm relatively new to birdwatching and I would like to id some birds I saw when I was on holiday in the US. Are there any good websites? Thanks

Hi Cyberem and welcome from all the staff and moderators at Bird Forum.

You could try posting a photograph/descirption in the Bird Identification and Taxononmy forum

We have some real experts who hang out there

The US Geological Survey has good resources - google any US bird's name and it will take you to a page like this one for Hooded Merganser (http://www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i1310id.html) - but it is not browsable as far as I can work out so you would need to know what you thought it might be first. In reality, I suspect you would need a field guide "for fast effective results", although others may know of other online resources.

If you have photos of any of the birds, just stick 'em in the Identification and Taxonomy forum - you will be pleasantly surprised how quickly a name can be put to even some fairly poor photos, particularly if accompanied by a good description of location, habitat and behaviour.

Agree with that, but if you've a vague idea of what the bird might be, try searching the forum member's galleries. You may not find what you're looking for, but you'll see some great pics along the way.

This is one of my favourite sites, but you have to look up birds by name:

Still, it has photos as well as a comparison to look-alike birds, and it also has sound recordings too!

If you don't have any clue as to identity, though ,your best bet would be to post your photos in the Identification forum.
