are corncrakes still present on iona? (1 Viewer)

We heard several but saw none about two weeks ago. We walked up the road past the abbey and they were in the overgrown fields near to a youth hostel type building . Mind you, the farmers were mowing the nearby fields for hay so I guess they will have mown the ones we heard the Corncrakes in by now.

Some birds are still likely to be around (average date for 2nd nests hatching is early Aug) but males stop calling in early August so they will be hard to find now. I suspect it'll be a long shot to see one.

Cheers,
Andrew
