Yorkshire Birding (76 Viewers)

Terrible record shots of the Marsh Sand on the blog now along with slightly better shots of a Green Sandpiper.

Just back in from marsh sandpiper, didn't any green sandpiper while I was there but managed to get 4 tringa species into the scope at once.

decided to try for nightjar at thorne moor afterwards but not only failed to see nightjar, also failed to find the reserve :-C

Nice barn owl hunting over the fields between blacktoft and eastoft though.

Wouldnt have thought so Doc - seeing as they are annual at Hornsea in good numbers (up to about 7,500). They come onto the mere in the evening to feed on the chronomid emergence. It was thought they roosted on the mere but it appears they leave after dusk as none are present first thing in the morning so they probably disperse back into bridlington bay.

It would be a shame if all rare and scarce news gets bunged in the other thread although I understand the lack of discussion about rare birds on here leads to it not being heeded. The broad scope of the thread when I started it was birding in yorkshire and that definitely encompassed the scarce and rare as well as the more regular birds (think it was little gulls and spoonbills back then).

I hope that everyone enjoys the thread and its good to see more use by a large diversity of birders of differing types as opposed to what was perceived as the clique a couple of years ago when it was all similar type birders that used the thread. Long may it continue (hopefully including discussion of rare birds).

Forgot to say - had a juvenile Little Egret at Tophill. Wonder where that came from?

Hi James

I know Little Gulls come in there, have been to see them! Point is would be very rare bird in York area....and much of Yorkshire! Is there an east coast bias thing going on here?.I have Little gull on my list because of the sharing of info on this site...and I would like that sharing to continue on here!!

Twitchers have other IT methods for receiving news...its nice to here about it on here but anyone not wanting to look at Barn owl pics can flick through quickly!

I never saw this site as a rare bird reporting site(u pay your money and subscribe to various providers for that).I don't personally, enjoy my patchwork and occaisional trips to coast.

Just think things have changed since a few (welcome) newcomers have come on;rarity chasers have their outlets, nice hearing about rare birds, but not all who visit this forum are rarity chasers.

I could post some superb photos of another owl, scarce yorks breeder, but haven't , out of respect for those who guided me, and the location etc.

So whilst I might be boring everyone with BO photos , i'm doing other stuff as well.
Forum users need to grow up, and stop P*****g on everybodys strawberrys!!

Sorry

Was just cheesed off!!

Chill bill...I love the barn owl pics - keep em coming. Just think that rare and scarce has a place here as well as it is a major part of birding be it finding or twitching.

Doc's right though. I don't mind there being a separate thread but is it really necessary? If someone finds this thread too mundane or tedious then it's not difficult to whizz through it, it's not like we are talking robins and dunnocks on the bird table. Before last year I had a 20 year wait to see a barn owl locally so that is scarce enough for me.

i'm complaining about your barn owl pics DOC, you're obviously getting too many regular views and coming up with too good pics it aint fair.

as for rare bird threads said my piece yesterday, can't see any reason for it. other than wasting the time of people who aren't just interested in rares but actually have an interest in all birds regardless.

My sentiments also:t:

Probably not necessary, I'm always impressed by how active this thread is when compared against some of the other county threads.
However if some people feel the need to have a separate one then I don't see it as a problem, I will just use both.

Keep the pictures coming, I wish I could get shots like those.

Thanks folks.
I've been walking that path for ages, certainly since the mid 90's before the fence at the top of the hill went up. The locals have been walking the path for many many years so I imagine the RSPB must have seen the light about it and decided it wasn't any good trying to exclude people from it anymore.
Nice that the turtles are back on the reserve again, and redstarts are very good birds to have on the reserve as breeders.

Basically, the RSPB got the money to fence it off from the stacks, where there are still -rightly or wrongly - felt to be safety issues. So now folk can do a full circuit of the west end without having to go along the undeniably dangerous road.
The path isn't yet sufficiently well made for wheelchairs or buggies, but is as pleasant walk as ever it was - &, at the moment, quite a productive one for birds and butterflies.

Got to Blacktoft eventually, after 1.00pm before I set off thanks to late arrival of delivery men.
Had to wait almost an hour before the marsh sandpiper put in appearance but got some crippling views of the bird. At one point I almost had redshank, spotted redshank, greenshank and marsh sand in the scope view at the same time, the spot red wouldn't move over a bit to let me get it.
Down the other end of the reserve at Townend I found 4 green sandpipers and also a water rail skulking through the reeds behind the birds.
At least 7 marsh harriers in the air as well, saw 4 together with another bird way off to the right close to the barn owl box and the sixth bird to the left near the the pub. This added up to 1 male, 1 definite female and 4 cream crowns, also a bit later had 2 males in the air together. I hadn't expected any birds to be flying today as it was really nippy on the reserve with a definite cold breeze.
Counted 4 little egret, 2 adults and 2 juveniles but no spoonbills.
Almost forgot, there was a female garganey showing well from First hide feeding in the weedy area in front of the island.

pcurpb- thanks for the info on the fencing at Fairburn.
