Went to the Bristol lizard orchid site today. Found 3 today , all behind the barrier. Almost in full flower . Saw 2 or 3 other groups looking today . You can view them from the path and this photo was taken from the path.

A belated post as I have been out of the country, and catching upon everything since my return home. Finally getting round to the orchid pictures I took down in Kent on the 18th. Very pleased to see Late Spiders and Man Orchids, plus the Lizards at Sandwich. I had been warned that those would probably not be out, but it didn't take too long to find some ahead of the game

Thankyou for the update good to know. At least something has escaped taken so far.

Friends took me to Cambs yesterday evening. So this on my second visit the Lizard orchids were looking good with more in flower so if anyone plans to go the weekend should be good.

Spotted a twitter message mentioning the London Lizard orchid got dug up. However one friend mentioned it just did not appear as single Lizard Orchid plants at sites can do this.

Late Spider and Lizards looking grand in Kent yesterday, highly recommend a visit this week if you're planning on seeing them. Incredible plants!!

Agree. And for those interested in insects, black veined moth showing well at one of the LSO sites on Sunday. Bonus.

Lizards in Cambs

Hi all,

Sounds like the timing is right for Lizards this weekend!
Can anyone please PM with the details of the Cambs location?
Sounds like Newmarket but something precise would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Platanthera

Just got back from a visit to a supposid location for hybrid Butterfly orchids beside the Teifi river. No conclusive specimens were found but plenty of both parents growing side by side. However, the number of Greater Butterflys were dwarfed by the number of Lesser Butterflys growing in the adjacent peat and tussock bog where I lost count. By far the most I have ever seen of this species in Britain (~250 spikes?) and some of the largest - a true spectacle!

Also a pic of some other orchid I found at Kenfig yesterday - any ideas what it is?

Mike

Dactylorhiza x carnea ?

Went to a Dorset site for D. incanata ssp. pulchella x D. maculata hybrids (information from Ted Pratt's booklet "The Special Wild Flowers of Purbeck"). The orchids there appeared to be D. incanata ssp. pulchella but this one stood out as a being particularly sturdy. There were no spots on the leaves however, which I believe D. x carnea would have, so it is probably a normal pulchella, but would appreciate comments from someone with more knowledge than me on hybrids, so that I know what to look for in future.

photo from 3rd June 2011.

It wasn't hard to find as it was the only plant at the site! Site wasn't in Dorset, or at least I don't think it is, but down that way though.

Checked out the Glos Red Helleborine site yesterday and could see one in flower in much the same area as the ones that flowered last year - quite a long way from the fence. Could also see one in bud from the bottom path which might be a bit closer to the fence but not much. Could also make out about 10 non-flowering plants marked with small cocktail stick type markers

Musk Orchids just beginning to flower at a nearby site near Cheltenham.

Also visited another site in Glos today where there were pretty reliable rumours of a solitary flowering Red Helleborine last year. Didn't see anything (or anyone!) but noted a number of eminently suitable locations. Will be following this up shortly.

Poosibblyyy? Probably I'd say. Where was it? I'm in the pub ATM so can't actually check it out lol. Nice pic as well btw

Kenfig - think someone went the other day and had their pics confirmed as Dark Green so I assume it is.

Apologies to everyone else who's here for orchids, I was just too lazy to go to the insect forum!

I was at Kenfig on Sunday and had a few Dark Green Frits, despite the crap weather
