Swarovision 10x50 for primary glass??? (1 Viewer)

This past year I have been on a personal crusade. I say personal more to the fact that I haven't shared my findings here or other forums! I have bought, sold and given away more Swarovski binoculars than you can shake a stick at! I was curious to see for myself if there was a difference in years to the coatings applied to Swarovski glass!? I will post a different thread on that and what I saw! So some of you know that I was really looking to purchase the SV 10x50! I have voiced my opinion on several occasions that this binocular gave me a view that no other binocular ever had. So I went binocular shopping not intending to purchase the big swaro, I already had the 10x50 SLC I recently purchased!I went looking for the new sSLC in 8x42 but, no where to be found! So with money smoking in my pockets there they were thebig sv's! I handled the 8.5's first, oh like a glove felt good in the hands. Peered through them ugh! Diopter all wacky finger prints! Nah, let me see those, ahhhh! Now that's what I'm talking about don't even look like they been handled! The view one word, SUBLIME!!! I won't say where I was at to save people any embarrassment! Do you have one new in box, yes I will take it! Fast forward sitting at home peering through my new glass I couldn't help but think about the slc's I mean I had thought it out my new purchase was for a primary use everyday any situation glass! I have others but, for my primary glass I wanted a swiss army knife the ultimate leathermans tool!!! OK, I have dealt with most of the big box stores! Sent out a pm to*Gordon, aka proud papa to you on the forum! After a couple of pm' s he answered a pretty simple question! Put my mind at ease and put a hole in my wallet! Today he put in an order for me to Swarovki for a 8x32 el sv to be drop shipped to me at home! So while I do love the view through the 10x50 its not the tool I was looking for! Luckily I will be able to return them! And for anybody looking to purchase new Swaro's I highly recommend Gordon, he is fair on pricing and I felt he went above and beyond offering to get one direct from Swarovski so I could get a newer model than what he had in stock! Pretty tops in my book! Bryce...

I was really sad having to return the 10x50 sv today! Its the best 10x I have had the pleasure of using. To me nothing to really fault except maybe the size. I hope I don't find the 8x32 sv lacking??? I wasn't as impressed with it as I was its big brother! I know its a fine binocular in its own right having looked through it many times! Only time will tell??? Bryce...

What a story of unrequited love, shame it didn't work out. Still, you got to try them out at home and thats all you can do. And you still have your big SLC.

When I tried out the EL SVs at the Bird Fair I tried the 8.5 and the 8x32 and I found the 8x32 really special and it 'spoke to me' much more than the 8.5 so I hope it 'speaks' to you too.

I only tried the 8x42 of the new (not labelled HD) SLCs and I liked it better than the 8.5 SV, but I would be hard pressed to explain why now, although on the day it was clear to me.

Good luck with the 8x32.

I only handled the 10x50 briefly--loved it but I just don't want anything bigger/heavier than a 42mm I guess.

I think you'll like the little SV. I've been using the 8.5 for three years now and the 8x32 for about a year and a half. Everything else mainly sits in the drawer. I use them about equally, but if the 8x32 had been available when I picked up the 8.5, well I suspect I might have passed on the bigger one. The little SV is, as you say, sublime. Best in-hand feel of anything I've ever tried.

The 10x50 SV is the best 50mm binocular I have ever looked through. If you can hold the weight there is nothing that will beat it. You won't find the 8x32 SV lacking.

IMO- even though I no longer own one- the SV 8x32 is the best all around binocular that I have ever held and looked through.

Subjective I know- but I think it ( the 8x32 SV) is their cream of the crop so to speak- the overall best Swarovski has made to date. It's balance of qualities to me makes it a real winner.

I'm lost here, Bryce, perhaps because I didn't read the beginning of your story on another thread. What made you think that a 10x50 would be a primary use everyday any situation glass? Even a 10x32 or a 10x42 wouldn't fit that definition for most birders.

A 10x50 is more of a skinner, fish fillet knife, gut hook knife than a Swiss Army knife since it's more often used my hunters, naturalists and amateur astronomers than birders (although there was the tale of a famous birder who used an old 10x50 porro some might recall). The Swiss Army knife of binoculars would be a zoom bin whose lower powers didn't have small AFOV, which apparently isn't optically possible, or perhaps a Duovid since a Swiss Army knife implies a variety of uses.

Certainly, an 8x32 would be more versatile for birding, with its wider FOV and better close focus, and it will be more comfortable to hold for extended periods than the heavier 10x50, but for looking long I'd take a good quality 10x50 over a 10x32 and 10x42 because of its larger exit pupil and it's larger aperture, which I could also use for stargazing. For me, a 10x50 SE with 6.5* would be a dream (and it will remain a dream since they will never make one!).

Also, what question did Gordon answer that put your my mind at ease?

Btw, the only way I'd have that much money "smoking" in my pocket would be if my pants were on fire. ;)

He asked which ones were better for picking up chicks. Get it? Picking up chicks? Bird Forum? OK, it was pretty lame but this up pretty late for me. Night all.

Brock, if you have ever looked through a 10 x sv you would understand! The view is extremely addictive! The question proudpapa65 answered was is the slc8x42 as sharp as the 8x32sv! Simple answer, NO! Bryce...

Stephen, that is what I'm looking for the best all around binocular! Bryce...

I second that and I have owned a LOT of binoculars.
