New Sigma 150/600 (2 Viewers)

i have just tried mine with a canon 1.4 mkii t.c and the a/f is fine at 600mm and playing around earlier today using the 10mtrs to infinity limiter the lens focussed as fast at 600mm as a canon 400mm f5.6 prime ,its obviously slower at full focus range but thats not what its designed for .just waiting for a bit of decent weather to try it properly the freezing fog has been hanging over head for 3 days now ,not a breath of wind either .
to sum up on a 1.6 crop sensor you get a maximum of 960mm range .
and with a 1.3 crop sensor thats f8 enabled you get a maximum of 1092mm with full a/f
That's 1344mm on the 7D2 then Jeff - useful if the IQ is OK with a converter. Interesting that it works OK with the Canon 1.4x II as well.

BTW I see that Amazon UK are doing it for £1278 (Canon fit) but that is on pre-order as they have no stock at the moment.

I did see some of the sigma mount ones on there at silly prices Roy .you could always get the mount changed ,don't know how much though
That does look like a genuine price though Roy ,although they don't actually state the sports model although the pics are of one and between 1 to 3 months delivery

Yep, I noticed they did not actually say it was the Sport model Jeff but looking at the specs the weight and everything else is right so it must be the sport.
It seem strange why there is not more of these about seeing it was released over 4 moths ago (I have seen user pics from early November!). User field reviews are almost non existent and it is not up on Fred Miranda reviews or the digital picture lens comparisons.
At this rate it is going to be ages before the likes of HDEW get hold of them.

BTW I see the Contemporary version weighs (1.930 kg) almost the same as the Tammy as is the MFD (2.8 mtrs). Someone on another site reckoned their dealer hopes to get them in within two weeks - we shall see.

i was going to hang on for the contemporary model ,but having had a go with a demo sport in december i was hooked ,time will tell if its the right move .they really have gone overboard on quality control though roy ,i have checked out most functions etc including back button follow focus and can't fault it ,the deciding moment actually happened last week when i tried a mates tamron out and it refused to pick up focus on a close subject after distance using bbf ,the same initial fault that was reported

edit ,just done the software update via the USB dock ,haven't yet altered any settings but wow some of the things you can do with it are unreal.

had to get out despite the weather ,which is still a solid grey overcast sea mist ,visibility around 3 to 400 yards/mtrs up here ,so i drove down to the local estuary armed with a few slices of bread for the gulls .
i have been playing with the focus limiter switches and find they really speed the lens up as opposed to full focus , i should think after a while it will become second nature or i'll put my own limits in via the usb dock .
anyway despite the poor light i,m really pleased with the overall results and can't wait for the return of the sun and blue skies ,tried out both cameras with no real difference in i/q again that might improve with better light being the 70d has twice the megapixels of the 1d3 .
taking that into account heres a couple of gull shots to be getting on with

I have no doubt that the Sport will be better than the contemporary Jeff but for those who would prefer something a little lighter then the contemporary could be an option.
Agree with you about the Tammy, IQ is OK but the AF is far from brilliant to say the least.

Hope these settings are of help to someone.
They worked well for me :

Sigma 150-600mm settings

Normal mode
------------------
Focus:*Standard
Focus limiter : 10m to infinity
OS setting : Standard

C1
----
Focus: *Drive speed-priority
Focus limiter : 20m to infinity
OS setting : Dynamic

C2
----
Focus :*accuracy-priority
Focus limiter : 30m to infinity
OS setting : Moderate

i hear what your saying roy ,but the result is what counts .and after todays software update the other things you can do with the dock are mind blowing like do a m/a adjustment for each zoom range .has to be seen to be believed

walkies

out today for its first real walk around ,i took it to burton mere and showed it all the nice places for when the light was better .and after resting in the hide for 15 minutes i took it walkies again back to the car ,on the way home we spotted a nice buzzard on a fence and the lens asked me if it could get some shots of it so we did .hand held while sitting in the car not supported at all and wide open ....

That's really nice Bokeh there Jeff - looking good.

hi roy
i was a bit concerned about buying the sigma because its a new lens and its always a bit of a gamble as the i q might not have been as good as they say it is but i wanted the versitility of a zoom lens and a bit longer reach than my canon 400 5.6
so far im well chuffed with the images that its producing and im a happy and relived boy
