ID Help Please - Houston, TX. Many Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. I can definitely rule out Orange-crowned as I see and photograph them quite often. The Tennessee does have similar markings, but the beak of this bird is larger, eyes lack arcs and overall has more yellow than a Tennessee. I'm thinking Vireo.

    Bird ID Help in Texas

NanaB, The bird's beak appears to be that of a warbler, not a finch. I would say it is a Pine Warbler.

    Tracking bird in view finder

As others have mentioned, practice is key. If you have a R/C model airplane field nearby, I've found that to be a good way to practice flight shots.

David, I use a Canon 7D with 300 2.8/ 600 4.0/ 100-400 zoom for dragonflies/butterflies/birds and both 12 & 25mm extension tubes and get excellent results. When using this setup I also use a good steady tripod. Dick

My best guess would be one of the Whiptails. I lean toward a Tiger Whiptail [Aspidoscelis (Cnemidophorus) tigris]. Hope this helps?

    Texas Christmas Bird Counts

J.W., Check your local Audubon Society's web site, I'm sure they list your local count circles and give a contact person. I've participated in the Spring, TX CBC conducted by the Piney Woods Wildlife Society for the last five years and had a great time, even when the weather was not so great...
