    Should birders be conservationists?

Humans certainly should be infinitely adaptable, but my point is that we are not necessarily willing to adapt - even to save ourselves from being wiped out.

    Should birders be conservationists?

I knew there would be a catch. Not easy this conservation lark, is it?

    Should birders be conservationists?

Does that mean I am finally doing my bit for conservation!!!???

    Should birders be conservationists?

Do you know, I'm not sure I care anymore. What I love about 'birding', is sitting on Titchwell beach at 6 in the morning watching the sunrise and the Oystercatchers picking at the shallow pools. I enjoy watching the GC Grebes fishing from the Ouse Washes hides, and the Cormoronts flying over...

    Should birders be conservationists?

Very nice Steve, apologising and then throwing an accusation of 'wilful ignorance' at other posters! I may well be ignorant, but it's certainly not wilful. Oh well, the games people play...... A pity because the rest of your post makes complete sense to me, and if you'd posted that in response...

    Should birders be conservationists?

This isn't one of your nice Norfolk 'coast hoppers' Karl, it's as old as me and twice as smelly! But I take your point completely. I could make all sorts of excuses as to why I don't follow Deborah's examples to the degree she does, but in the end the reason is quite simple. I am not willing to...

    Should birders be conservationists?

A minor issue, but I'm not sure that the bus that serves our village is anymore 'green' than my car!

    Should birders be conservationists?

What we need now is a lower grade Conservationist definition.. Doesn't tick all the boxes, but is mindful of the issues, and tries to compensate by increasing awareness to others, and by doing regular local volunteer work to preserve local habitat / sign the petitions. A few more Birders would...

    Should birders be conservationists?

It's a fair point - all this fuss about saving 'The Planet', when what we're actually talking about is self preservation of the human species. And I imagine, although I am open to contradiction by experts, that humans are less likely to be able (or willing) to adapt to climate change due to our...

    Should birders be conservationists?

I can list lots of things I personally do or don't do with regard to conservation that are unrelated to birding eg. recycling, voluntary work (20yrs of it!), financial donations, petition signing, domestic reduction of energy, planting trees in the garden, buying secondhand goods/clothes...

    Should birders be conservationists?

I think this reply is completely irrational and unwarranted. I don’t think that any of my posts have been unreasonable, I am genuinely trying to understand the nature of the original post so that I can reply accordingly. In another less civilised forum I would be happy to have slanging match...

    Should birders be conservationists?

Not sure where you get the 20 years thing from, and your reply is a cop-out anyway. I'm not mud-slinging or making any unreasonable personally targeted remarks, just asking a perfectly civil question. You are saying, almost boasting, that you are a conservationist, what do you mean by that? I...

    Should birders be conservationists?

Exactly. And I ask again, what's the definition of 'conservationist'? Those on this thread who claim to be one, should have the answer at their fingertips.

    Should birders be conservationists?

You can question away, but I reserve the right to follow my convictions, even if they go against those expected by others of a birder. I suppose to answer your original question we still need a detailed definition of 'conservationist'. Is it caring about the environment? Taking positive action...

    Should birders be conservationists?

I take your point James, but in my opinion the dangers need to be sold and marketed like a product – features and benefits. And to preach to those that ‘have their fingers in their ears’ is like talking louder in English to a non-English speaking Frenchman who doesn’t understand our language...
