    The Magic Roundabout

Maybe I missed this is a previous reply (I scanned most of the comments, but alas, I did not see anything)...is the roundabout and/or the golf course accessible without leaving the confines of the airport/security? I have a 2-hour layover on both ends of a holiday to Vietnam next month, so...

Daurian Redstart (?) - Kyoto, Japan

Thanks, all. One would think that after 20 years I'd have figured out Larry's point, but I also trip over my own feet sometimes...

Daurian Redstart (?) - Kyoto, Japan

While in Japan I saw quite a few Daurian Redstarts, but this one doesn't quite match the field guide (Birds of East Asia - Mark Brazil). I am assuming that this bird is molting from basic to alternate, yeah? These photos were taken on March 20th, 2013 along one of the canals in Kyoto. I can...

    Trip to Vietnam

Good morning, My family and I are putting together a trip to Vietnam for this August. While birding will be secondary (I am the only birder that will be going), there will be at least 1-2 days devoted to birding, as well as each morning. We will be primarily around Hanoi and HCM City (flying...

    Birds around San Francisco

Mal - I saw my life Anna's at Golden Gate park in 2000, 8 years before I moved to CA. They are quite common there. This spot in general will be good for you, as well as some of the other suggestions you made. The Falcon Guide to Northern CA is terrible, but unfortunately there is nothing...

closure of many of CA's state parks

There are still more than enough reasons to bird here. As much as I love and support CA's system of state parks, I often find myself birding elsewhere.

    El Segundo ?

Pelagic Cormorants are much more common at Playa del Rey. That may be what you saw.

    El Segundo ?

The breakwaters @ Playa del Rey are good, not great, in the summer. All have an opportunity to see plenty of things. There are also a few nearby parks. The nearby Ballona Freshwater Marsh still has a Little Blue Heron, a rarity for the area.

closure of many of CA's state parks

They should turn 80 into a toll road. I am glad to pay taxes or tolls when the money is being used for useful things, and supporting SEPTA is quite useful. If I were still a resident in PA, I'd be glad to pay more for this. And yes, I am well aware that most states have financial problems --...

closure of many of CA's state parks

This reminds me of a proposal in Philly a few years ago. SEPTA was low on money, so they threatened to scale back public transit to only business hours on M-F. Public outcry was immense and they got their money at the last minute. Perhaps this is a similar tactic -- put a crazy cut like this...

What's your National (State, Province, County, etc. Bird?

The state bird of California is the California Quail, which has yet to join the ranks of my lifelist. I am originally from Philadelphia, and the state bird of Pennsylvania is the Ruffed Grouse, which I've seen exactly once while on a Boy Scout trip.
