    7Dmkii question

If your laptop has a card reader on the side, just take the card out of the camera and download them that way. I always download via a card reader onto my main pc, its quick and no need for any other software.

Did you know about this one: http://www.diptera.info/news.php Loads on there and the forum is very helpful if you need guidance on ID's. Linda

What Caterpillar?, Southern England, 17 Sept 12

Im not totally sure, but it looks like it 'could' be the Vapourer moth caterpillar. Linda

    Confirmation

Im not sure that the photo is clear enough for a positive ID on that one. If you want to take photos for ID purposes, its best if you can get as close as possible, take clear shots of back view showing markings, side views showing leg colours and a face shot if possible. I dont know if you...

    Portslade, East Sussex Hoverfly

I agree with Brian above, it is Eristalis tenax. I always hesitate to jump straight in with trying to ID a common one without re-checking my book lol. Hovers are quite difficult to get a 100% correct ID - some are easier than others. Linda

    Portslade, East Sussex Hoverfly

It is an Eristalis(drone fly) but not sure without referring to my book which one - probably Tenax or Pertinax. I will have a look later if I get time, if not tomorrow and get back to you. Linda

    whats this uk

How strange. Actually, you might like to post that picture and the circumstances on the Hoverfly Recording Scheme forum. This might be of interest to them. The website is: http://www.hoverfly.org.uk/viewforum.php?f=5 Roger Morris may well be interested (or he may not) but I always feel that...

    whats this uk

Hi - yes, it is a hoverfly. Very sad if there were hundreds of dead ones - plus unusual to have 'hundreds' of the same one all in the same area. Linda

    Two Syrphids to identify please...

I think the second photo is one of the Sphaerophoria species. They can be tricky to ID any further than that but at least you have something to go by. You might just be happy with an ID of Sphaerophoria sp. or try doing some further research. I found this link which might help to make a start...

Here is a link to a small article on the BTO website regarding wildfowling and cold weather that you might find interesting. http://www.bto.org/news-events/news/cold-weather-birds You could always contact someone at BTO or RSPB and have a chat to them.

    Attracting Woodpeckers

For quickness and cheapness, this little suet feeder works a treat: http://shopping.rspb.org.uk/p/BirdFeeders/Square_bird_cake_feeder_and_cakes.htm I never used to get the GSW's in our garden but a year or so ago when I put one of these out, I regularly had 3. They have been absent during the...

    Sussex Birding

Yes, I can understand that, but there should be water around the first part of the reserve as that would not affect the work being done way over at North Brooks. The water that is normally in the first couple of scrapes is entirely separate from North Brook. The diggers were sitting over the...

    Sussex Birding

Last time we went was on 8 August when the diggers were there and due to start the following day. Not been back since and probably wont go for a while yet as I was thoroughly disappointed - no water at all except a small amount up at the North Brooks. I know they manage the water levels there...
