    Minox 8 x 25 Macroscope Monocular

Thanks for the reply, I decided to purchase a pair of Pentax Papilio 6.5x21mm binoculars instead - I found them easier to hold. Overall I'm very impressed, especially considering the £56 cost from Tecno.

    The ethics of beetles collecting

I'm sitting on the fence with this one. But it strikes me that there's some common sense guidelines & information on the British Entomological & Natural History Society website. Just click on the 'Collecting Code' link at the top left hand side of the page. http://www.benhs.org.uk/benhs.html

    Finding emerging Hawkers

Arlequin printed 'Butterflies & Dragonflies a site guide' by Paul Hill & Colin Twist back in 1998 (ISBN 1 900159 05 8), however I think the books now out of print. One site mentioned within is Felmersham Gravel Pits, Beds (Grid Ref SP991584)...

    Emperor Dragonfly. Berks, UK.

I've personally only ever observed Emperor's doing this.

    Emperor Dragonfly. Berks, UK.

Ah, I should point out that I've never actually seen one land, perch is a far better description. I guess the best bet for getting a photograph would be at the crack of dawn, in the hope you find one that hasn't flown away from it's overnight 'roost'. Superb photograph, shame about the...

    Emperor Dragonfly. Berks, UK.

I guess they must have to land at somepoint, but of all the hawkers the Emperor is best described as a tireless flier, the males are extremely wary & territorial, constantly on patrol & feeding on the wing. A combination that makes photography difficult, I've come close to getting a shot on a...

    Emergence Q

Hi, Picture one shows an Emperor Dragonfly near the end of it's emergence (although I'm fairly certain it wasn't successful as the Emperor is hanging downwards rather than in an upright position & the body looks slightly twisted, see discription below as to how it should have emerged). The...

    Emperor Dragonfly. Berks, UK.

Perfect - Female Emperor, egg laying. Males patrol relentlessly, catch and eat on the wing and defend territories with vigour. Photographing the males is practically impossible, unless your lucky enough to find one catching a butterfly (which is quite a sight) - It's about the only time...

    Best £50 worth (UK) ?

Without doubt Pentax Papilio's 6.5x21 at £56 from Techno. Truely superb compact bins, especially if you wish to observe other wildlife such as dragonflies, butterflies & insects generally. The close focus ability is totally amazing at only 1.6ft - Sometimes less is more !! Rapidly becoming...

    Trinovid rubber armouring

Please don't use Cyanoacrylates (superglues) near optics, as it 'outgases' and may leave a mist /fog on surrounding objects which is nigh on impossible to remove (not good for expensive lens coatings). Silicone is probably the best bet, or hot melt glue, if you must use a glue. Superglue...

Black Dragonfly id : Description only (sorry)

A good place to start would be the British Dragonfly Society website. You'll find a photo guide under the UK species link on the left-hand side of the page. I'd start looking under: Family Libellulidae - Chasers, Skimmers and Darters. http://www.dragonflysoc.org.uk Regards Mark

For 127 you're not going to find a better set of binoculars - Simply superb value for money.

Is this a Scarce Chaser please? (Wilts, UK)

Opps 3:-) Upon taking a closer look at the photograph - I'm unsure, agreed, it does look like a maturing male Scarce Chaser..... But no dark patches on wing tips?

Is this a Scarce Chaser please? (Wilts, UK)

Hmm, brown patches at the base of the wings - Male Broad-bodied Chaser (Libellula Depressa) ?

    ID Please

I agree with the Emperor suggestions. Head, body shape & colour all consistant, the larval length should be 45-56mm
