    Two Handsome Hovers

Well one that turned up in my garden on Sunday was a real cracker, It looked like a Hornet in flight, and was the biggest fly I have ever seen. It goes by the name of Volucella zonaria (does not seem to have a common name) Normally found in the southern counties of England, The one in my garden...

    Volucella zonaria

This is the bigest hoverfly I've ever seen. It tuned up in my garden on Sunday and I thought it was a Hornet when I saw it in flight. Once it landed however I new it was a fly. It's body length = 25mm. This is normally bound in the south, and as far as I know only one other has been seen in...

    European Dragon ID requied

Just got back from hanging out by the pool and drinking beer in Spain (Denia) and have just been reviewing some pics. I thought the Dragonfly in the attached was a Keeled Skimmer (Orthetrum coerulesens), but I'm now not so sure and think it is more likely to be Orthetrum brunneum. I'm basing...

    Ruddy Darter (I think)

I took this this evening in pretty poor lighting conditions (lucky there was no wind or 1/25 of a sec might have been a problem) I think it's a imm male Ruddy Darter, but I stand to be corrected on this. Paul

Interesting. My originally thought was that this was a Variable, in which case it would be a 1st for this site. I have sent the pic to the Dragonfly Society but am still waiting a response from them.

    Damsel ID required

Can anyone help to ID this Damselfly. Seen at Paxton Pits (Cambs) last Friday. The nearest I can find in my field guide is female Dainty Damselfly, but I doubt if I could have been lucky enough to find one of those, so I would appreciate some expert help here. Paul

    Blue-tailed Damselfly Colour Variations

4 shots of Blue Tailed Damselflies with very different coloured thorax. The top picture is the standard colour form (both sexes are very similar) The bottom centre is an immature male, bottom left is a female form violacea and bottom right is a female form rufescens. The blue one was shot in my...

Comment by 'Paul Rule' in media 'Transit of Venus'

The trouble with the next one is that to see it well you need to be somewhere in the middle of the Pacific. See following link for map of World visibility. http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/transit/venus/Map2012-2.GIF

OK its nothing to do with birds but I thought it might interest some. Taken this morning at 10:15 BST, using binos, a piece of white card and my EOS 300D

    Red-Tailed Hawks Webcam

The Massachussetts Institute of Technology has a pair of Red-tailed Hawks who have built a nest in a tree outside their videoconferencing centre. So they have set a webcam up on it to keep an eye on the two fledglings inbetween their videoconferences. Well worth a look: :cool...
