    Excellent point. At least in American English, the meaning of a word or term is determined by its common usage. There is no "Bureau of American English" or anyone who determines definitions but rather how everyone who uses the word or term (I can't speak as to how it is done in other countrys...

    Woodpecker type bird, Merritt Island, FL, USA

    Thanks for the ID. I see Red-bellied Woodpeckers almost every day (they are very common around my house) but this one threw me, maybe because of the slightly different coloration as mentioned above.

    Lakeland, FL - This past weekend

    Good luck with the photo. I think Belted Kingfishers must be one of the most skittish birds around. After years of trying and hundreds of mediocre photos, I finally lucked into a few good shots recently at Viera Wetlands where they are fairly common.
