    Got a 300mm f2.8...........what next 5 or 600mm

    If you can afford the 600 & upgrade in tripod etc & can cope with the extra weight, go for it. Its easier to back off from your subject than it is to get closer. I often use mine with a 2x tc to give 1200mm f8.

    D800e or D4

    Save the extra & go for the D4. Everything you could ever want in a wildlife camera. I have not suffered with lack of reach by going fx.

    Tripod Head...

    I have a 393 that i use on my monopod & car window mount. I have removed the 357 plate clamp & put a 4" arca-swiss type clamp on it. I found them far better made & robust & would defy anyone to remove the plate without undoing it first. I feel far happier with it on there than i did with...

    The 400 f2.8 is nearly as big & heavy as the 600 f4. You will need decent support for it as well.

    Tripod & Head Advice

    Most heads have a standard thread either 1/4 or 3/8 BSW. The legs will have one or the other & you can get an adaptor to convert one to the other. So in short, yes it will be! Cheers Rob

    Nikkor 600mm AFS II

    I have the VR version of this lens & also think that the vr slows up the af. Keep the shutter speed up & you wont miss it.

    Hi, I wasn't refering to being able to get to the zoom or focus rings. What i meant was that by zooming in & out, you are changing the lenses center of balance because the lens gets longer or shorter as you do so. This would upset the balance of the gimbal. The Nikkor 200-400 or Sigma 300-800...

    A gimbal head would be a pain in the neck to use with a zoom lens. They are designed for heavy primes & need to be set up to balance properly. A zoom lens would continually need adjusting to get the balance correct while zooming in & out (internal zooms such as the sigma 800 or nikkor 200-400...

    Quick release head for Monopod

    They are just as good, but they are not compatable with each other. All the arca-swiss clamps plates & feet should fit each other, giving a much bigger choice. Rob
