    Zeiss Christmas Wish Competition 2016

Well done! They're fantastic bins. I'm happy they've gone to a new birder too! Enjoy. :-)

    Falcon silhouettes

Thanks all. Don't think I can offer any more helpful additional photos, but appreciate the advice! I'm sad not to have to had a hobby, but interesting to see a kestrel behave this way. Have seen then bombing down upland ravines and being similarly swift, but never like this. Many thanks!

    Falcon silhouettes

Thanks all, will check photos again when at home in case there's anything else useful, particularly wing/tail ratio. If it's a kestrel it wasnt behaving like any other I've ever seen. It was a relatively still day, so why it wouldn't have been hovering is odd, particularly when it was employing...

    Falcon silhouettes

Hi all, Would be grateful for some help with these poor quality photos taken today - I'm pretty sure it's either a juv. Peregrine or a Hobby (it would be my first hobby!). Location: Marazion Marsh (Coastal reedbed), Cornwall Description: Heavily mottled underparts (giving the impression of...

    LBJ song.

Thanks! Had seen plenty of dunnocks around, must have just caught this one at an odd angle!

    LBJ song.

Bird heard and seen singing from a bush on a railway siding at Leighton Moss, near the feeders on the way to the shore hides, on Saturday. Partner had the camera and didn't take a picture, but was an LBJ, pink legs, unmarked buff grey breast. Will give more (less certain) visual clues if...

    Drive-by birding

Today on a commute from Manchester to Cardiff for a work meeting I had quite a decent morning of birding, when glancing up from my paperwork to look out on the sunny snow capped hills. Highlights included a red kite in the Shropshire Hills, a dipper (which I was chuffed with) on the River Onny...

Simple silhouette.... Help me learn to ID!

You guys are very good, and kind folk. Dealing with people who can't tell a crow from a kestrel from dawn til dusk.... *sigh* But for learners like me, it's most valuable to get some community help to confirm or otherwise educate my naive IDs... So, with that in mind, see below silhouette...

    Dorset birding

Evening all, I have a work trip to Dorset in mid-March. Working the weekend just by Hambledon Hill NNR by Dorchester and hopefully will take a few days off and stay a couple of nights down at Portland Bill. Any tips for where to visit? Or should I just stay where I happen to be Hambledon Hill...

    Hide clamp or table tripod?

Thanks both. Decent advice on the shaking desk. And for £29 a hide clamp doesn't seem too much to spend. Sucks to have stuff taken from a hide. I've seen people leave backpacks full of gear in hides and them stay there for hours. We're usually a pretty trustworthy lot... I'll probably be...

    Hide clamp or table tripod?

Hi all, I just bought my first scope the other day and am now considering all the peripherals I want or need. However, since this is a business where very few can afford everything at once, I wanted to take some considered advice on where I should go first for equipment. Firstly, the scope is...

    UK Osprey sighting in November?

Great advice guys and thanks. I said the same about the size.... Buzzards are bigger than you might expect up close! I trust these guys enough to believe them when they say it was definitely whiter than a buzzard. Especially at a distance of about 20 metres! Many thanks!

    UK Osprey sighting in November?

Hi all, Had a query from a friend this morning with a sighting of a large BoP in Devon, near to the River Avon Estuary, in a small patch of woodland. Here was the description: "Mum and I saw a huge, beautiful bird of prey in fairly remote woodland, near the estuary and I can't identify it. We...
