Identification
24 - 25 cm (9½-9¾ in). A medium-sized laughingthrush.
- Barred black and buff above
- Scaled white below
- Tail tipped black and white
- lores and area around eye whitish
Distribution
Endemic to south-central China.
A relatively uncommon restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
Also placed in the genus Ianthocincla.
Forms a superspecies with White-speckled Laughingthrush and has been considered conspecific with it.
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Open broadleaf and mixed broadleaf-coniferous forest, secondary forest and bamboo thickets. Usually between 1200 and 3080m, occasionally higher.

Diet
Feeds probably on invertebrates and vegetable matter.
Forages mostly on the ground. Quiet and unobtrusive.
Breeding
Breeding reported in June. No information about nest or clutch size.
