Identification
12 cm (4¾-5 in)
- Upperside and head including throat slaty to blackish
- White supercilium reaches just beyond the eye
- Long Rictal bristles
Juveniles have less white supercilium but shows a rufous wash to the dark areas.
Distribution
South America: found in Andes of western Venezuela (Mérida, western Barinas and Táchira)
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Chestnut-bellied Chat-Tyrant, Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant, and Blackish Chat-Tyrant formerly were one species named Slaty-backed Chat-Tyrant.
Habitat
Along forested streams in mid elevation, to heights around 3000 m asl.
Behaviour
Their main diet consists of insects which they capture from a favorite perch. They rarely join mixed species flocks.
Vocalisation
A high pitch whistle with a hissing quality.
