Identification
15 cm
- Dark reddish-brown both above and below
- Somewhat scaly on center of lower belly
- Eye dark brown
- Eye ring pale
- Bill dark but with buffy base of lower mandible
- Legs dark
Similar species
This bird has a darker and more saturated color than any other nearby member of the complex of Rufous Antpitta/Chestnut Antpitta.
Distribution
Western Andes of Colombia (northwestern Antioquia south to northwestern Cauca)
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
This species and 15 others were previously included in a complex of Rufous Antpitta/Chestnut Antpitta.
Habitat
Presumably similar to other members of the complex, it should be sought after in areas with dense understory of forest, second growth etc. Found at elevations of 2350–3650 m asl.
Behaviour
Presumably similar to other members of the Rufous Antpitta/Chestnut Antpitta complex.
Vocalisation
Long song is a trill of almost 50 notes given within 3 seconds, so next to no interval between notes but possibly slightly shower at the end. Short song consists of one note well-spaced from a trill of another five notes, each note slightly higher pitch in the middle.
