Choco Manakin - BirdForum Opus

Cryptopipo litae

Identification

11–13 cm (4½-5 in)
Relatively large and long-tailed manakin without much sexual dimorphism. Mainly green and yellow with greyish colors on bare parts.

  • Eye ring pale
  • Upperparts moss-green
  • Underparts olive-yellow at breast, pale yellow at the belly
  • Tail long and grey
  • Legs and eye grey

Sexes similar

Similar species

Some females of other species are similar in coloration but usually have shorter tail, are smaller, or have colored legs and/or eyes. Green Manakin differs slightly in plumage but has very distinct song.

Distribution

Central America: occurs only in Panama,
South America: found in Colombia and Ecuador, west of the Andes.

Taxonomy

This species was formerly included in Green Manakin.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1].

  • C. h. suffusa:
  • C. h. litae:
  • Tropical western Colombia to north-western Ecuador (south to Pichincha)

Habitat

Lower to mid level of humid to wet forests (including edges) up to above 1000 m asl.

Behaviour

Food includes fruit and insects, the latter to a larger extent than many other manakins.

Vocalisation

Song includes a high-pitched, thin whistle. A rattle that starts at a higher pitch before coming down a little has also been described.
