Widespread Palearctic region; eastern and southern Africa.

Subspecies
Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:
- C. c. coturnix breeding in Europe (including Madeira) east to Mongolia and south to northern Africa and northern India; migrates to Sahel zone in Africa
- C. c. conturbans on the Azores
- C. c. inopinata on Cape Verde Islands
- C. c. erlangeri in eastern Africa
- C. c. africana in southern Africa, Comoros, Madagascar, and Mauritius
Subspecies africana is split as African Quail by some authorities.

Grassland.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes insects and seeds.
Breeding
The clutch of 6-18 eggs are laid in a ground nest, and incubated for 16-18 days.
