Baron's Spinetail group: 15–19 cm (6-7½ in)

  • White supercilium
  • Reddish-brown crown
  • Greyish-brown face
  • Grey nape
  • White throat and upper breast

Distribution

South America: found in Ecuador and Peru

Five subspecies recognized[1]:

  • C. a. antisiensis:
  • Andes of south-western Ecuador (Azuay, El Oro and Loja)
  • C. a. palamblae:
  • Andes of north-western Peru (south to northern Cajamarca and Lambayeque)
  • C. a. baroni: Baron's Spinetail
  • Andes of Peru (Amazonas and Cajamarca)
  • C. a. capitalis:
  • Andes of Peru (Huánuco )
  • C. a. zaratensis:
  • Andes of southern Peru (Pasco and Lima)

The formerly listed subspecies furcata is now regarded as synonym of Cranioleuca curtata cisandina (Ash-browed Spinetail).

Habitat

Montane evergreen forest, hedgerows in urban areas. Observed at heights around 2,530 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists mostly of arthropods.

They are often seen foraging in mixed species flocks in the canopy or mid-storey.

Movements

A resident species.
