Identification
28-31 cm
Brown, long neck, black tail, long red bill, black and white striped crown and neck, black and yellow feet. Buff cheeks in the female and white for the male.
Distribution
Southern Mexico to northeastern Argentina and Brazil.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Tropical lowlands; swamps and marshes. Riparian forests.
Behaviour
Breeding
The twiggy nest is built over water. The 3-4 mottled cinnamon eggs are incubated for around eleven days. The male has modified wing pockets to carry the young and will fly with them.
Diet
The diet includes a variety of fish and water plants.
