Grallaria occabambae

Identification

15 cm

  • Upperside dark reddish-brown
  • Underside paler reddish-brown, with pale feather edges
  • Undertail coverts pale yellowish-buff
  • Eye dark brown
  • Bill and legs dark

Distribution

Andes of south-eastern Peru (extreme eastern Junín and Cusco)

Taxonomy

This species and 15 others were previously included in a complex of Rufous Antpitta/Chestnut Antpitta.

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1].

  • G. o. occabambae - east slope of the Andes of southern Peru, in extreme eastern Junín (Cordillera Vilcabamba) and Cusco (west of Yanatili River Valley)
  • G. o. marcapatensis - east slope of the Andes of southern Peru (eastern Cusco, east of the Yanatili River Valley and between the Tambo River to the north and the Marcapata River to the south)

Habitat

Presumably similar to other members of the complex, it should be sought after in areas with dense understory of forest, second growth etc. Found at elevations of 2450–3650 m asl.

Behaviour

Presumably similar to other members of the Rufous Antpitta/Chestnut Antpitta complex.

Vocalisation

Long song consists of around 12 notes given as a trill lasting about 3 seconds, with slightly longer interval between notes towards the end. Each note first increases and then decreases in pitch. The latter is also true for the short song which consists of 2 (subspecies occabambae) or 3 notes (subspecies marcapatensis).
