Identification

16–17 cm

  • Rufous crown through to nape
  • Black face
  • Long bill

Distribution

South America: found in Ecuador and Peru.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • A. s. celicae:
  • Andes of extreme southern Ecuador (western Loja)
  • A. s. simonsi:
  • Andes of extreme southern Ecuador (eastern and central Loja)
  • A. s. seebohmi:
  • Pacific slope of Andes of north-western Peru (La Libertad to Ancash)

Habitat

Dry forests and shrubby hillsides.

Behaviour

Diet

They forage close to or on the ground for large insects, fruits and seeds
