Genus: Pyrilia

Description

Medium sized parrots with short tail and wings

Taxonomy

Pyrilia if recognized would be a genus in the Family Psittacidae. None of the current major checklists recognize this genus, with the members placed in genus Pionopsitta. If the SACC proposal is to be accepted by a majority of worldwide checklists, then Pyrilia would contain Bald Parrot, Brown-hooded Parrot, Caica Parrot, Orange-cheeked Parrot, Rose-faced Parrot, Saffron-headed Parrot, and Vulturine Parrot. The DNA research paper that showed these species to differ significantly from Pileated Parrot (to remain in Pionopsitta) proposed to use genus Gypopsitta but the SACC thinks that Pyrilia takes precedent.
