Identification

  • Black crown and mantle
  • Bright orange throat
  • Paler chest and underparts

  • Black tail

Non-breeding males have varying levels of yellow.
Females - buff-brown, rusty wings, two-toned eyering.

Distribution

Asia: found in Japan, Korea, mainland China, and Taiwan

Habitat

Deciduous woodlands. Primary forest, Secondary forest and scrub, mangroves and city parks.

Behaviour

Prefers the lower storey and perches that are hidden by thick foliages and twigs.
