Identification

Distribution

Asia: found in Turkestan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, China, Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, India, Eastern and Western Himalayas, Bangladesh and Bhutan
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar and Thailand

Taxonomy

Formerly placed in genus Luscinia.

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • C. p. pectoralis:
  • C. p. confusa:
  • C. p. ballioni:
  • Western China (western Xinjiang from Tien Shan to Kashgar)
  • C. p. tschebaiewi:
  • Eastern Ladakh to north-western China (Gansu), south-eastern Tibet and extreme northern Myanmar

Gill and Donsker have now split this species in Chinese Rubythroat (tschebaiewi) and Himalayan Rubythroat (pectoralis with confusa and ballioni).

Habitat

Temperate forests.
