    Bargain Basement

Aldi have a Spotting Scope on sale currently for £25. I've just bought one for the grandkids and set it up pointing at their bird feeder. The Abberation around the fringes isn't great but the centre of the image is good enough. It's 20-40 zoom and comes with a tripod and carry cases. It's really...

    Silver-washed Fritillary, Norfolk & Suffolk

There's a mini-invasion going on at the moment. Norfolk has 14 reports of sightings, and suffolk 16. Worth keeping an eye out if you're about in those two counties.

    Aeshna cyanea

Discussion thread for Aeshna cyanea. If you would like to add a comment, click the Post Reply button. Unsure if this should be under scientific name or english common. In the end I've opted to enter here, as common names appear to be in a state of flux due to Dijkstraa's european field guide.

    Spring has sprung!

Last weekend seems to have brought the insects out. I have reports of Brimstones from 11 locations in Norfolk, plus 3 sightings of small tortoiseshell, 2 of red admiral and a peacock. Previously I had only had reports of a single Red Admiral: 27/1/08 and Peacock 12/1/08. Last Sunday I saw an...

Eyes peeled on the East Coast

The recent influx of red-veined darters appear to have brought company with them. There have been several reports of Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo) from Norfolk recently. As this doesn't breed any closer than Essex it seems likely that they are continental migrants, so it would be a...

    Photo donations please - dragonflies

Hi - I'm in the process of building a web site for the dragonflies of Norfolk but I'm desperately short of photos - ideally shots that could be used for id purposes, plus anything on emergence, mating and ovipositing, and exuvia. (Don't want much do I ;-) If you have any photos you wouldn't...

    Sometimes you get lucky

I've had little joy photographing dragonflies on account of the only camera I have is a "happy snapper" (Kodak dx3700) with no zoom and a completely useless autofocus - so most shots result in a small blur which is the dragonfly and a beautifully crisp bit of grass two foot behind it. But just...
