    Hawks in Virginia, USA

A friend in the States sent me the attached photo. Any idea what the species is. I thought they looked a bit like broad-winged hawks but surely they wouldn't be so far north in January?

    Photos

When I started mothing about 20 years ago, the camera you had to have was the Nikon Coolpix 4800. It was excellent for macro-work and not too expensive. I wonder what the equivalent camera is today? I'd love to get a camera that was no more than £400 (UK) which would take photos of equivalent...

    Cheap microscope

I splashed out £20 and bought the Bysameyee USB digital microscope, on the basis that I enjoy trying to ID insects that I've found in our garden and that it's not a huge amount of money to risk. I have found it quite fun to use, certainly enabling me to get shots of insects that my wife's bridge...

    very small beetles

I took photos of two beetles, partly because I'm still hoping eventually to find one of the inconspicuous ladybirds. But I don't think that either of these are ladybirds. They were both roughly 2mms long. Can anyone help me at all with IDs? Even to genus would be a lot better than I can do. I...

    Micro for ID please

This one was about 10 mm long and not the easiest to photograph. I think it could be Ypsolopha scabrella, which would be a new one for my garden if correct. But I'd be grateful for a second opinion.

    Micro in grassland

I found this one on 19th May in SE Surrey. It is in tall grass, but near ponds, trees and a wildflower meadow. Any help with ID would be appreciated. I think it's a Tortrix. I thought that it resembled Epiblema circiana but I'm not at all sure.

    Macro that has me struggling

I feel I should know this one but I'm very rusty. It doesn't seem quite right for knot grass - and there's only the merest hint of the two round 'oval' marks. Nearest I can get to is poplar grey but it doesn't look quite right either.

    Two small micros

I realise that these photos are no good - hard to get decent pix of very active insects which are less than a cm long. But has anyone any clue as to what species I have here. They were taken a couple of days ago (7th May) in Surrey, UK.

    pigeon UK

Pigeons are perhaps not everyone's cup of t but I was puzzled by this individual in our garden. At first I assumed that it was a juv woodpigeon; then I decided that it must be a feral pigeon (very rare in our garden). But a friend, who is no novice, thought that it might be a cross between...

    Exif data

Sorry if I'm in the wrong forum, but my camera is a Canon. My question is: how reliable is the Exif data. I'm trying to use old photographs to enter wildlife records but I don't know if I can trust the 'properties' on the photos. You seem to get some weird things like: 'Photo created 4.3.2018...

    Ant mystery

Can anyone help me with a mystery? In our garden, at the front, we have a raised bed with a few shrubs. The rest is covered in stone chippings. Today, my wife noticed hundreds of dead red ants there. We have no idea what killed them – it wasn’t any chemical that we have used. Then she spotted...

    Question

I gather that setaceous means 'bristly'. What makes a set Hebrew character notably bristly. I've searched the internet but all the sites concentrate on explaining that the Hebrew character looks like 'nun'.

    ID help

I saw an exuvia on a lily pad on our garden pond. When I fished it out, I could see that the dragonfly had emerged, although the split was not at all noticeable. I was surprised as I don't think I've ever seen a dragonfly emerge on a floating leaf before. I measured the case and it was 60mms -...

    Outlook not behaving

Just in case anyone can h elp. I run Windows 10 and MS Office 2019. I've got this problem where when I look at an email, all I can see is the first line of the message in the display panel - and nothing I do, seems to bring up the rest of the message. I know it's there because if I click on...

    Two poplars for ID

The first has been planted all along a local bridle path in Surrey. I'll attach some photos, taken in the last few days (i.e. early April). One noticeable feature is the 'smelly' leaves with the rather waxy upper surfaces. The smell is quite pungent but not unpleasant. The catkins are quite high...

    damselfly ID confirmation

I think these are a willow emerald damselfly and a fem. blue-tailed. The former would be a new one for me if confirmed. Thanks.

    US dragonfly

A friend in the US sent me this photo. I've been trying to ID it but it doesn't quite match any of the photos in the only book I have on N. American odos. The photo was taken near Boston, Mass. My friend doesn't know much about dragonflies but I thought I'd like to tell her what it is. I thought...

    PNG hawk

I don't know whether anyone can help with this hawkmoth, spotted by my brother in the highlands of Papua New Guinea.

    UK raptor

I took this (awful) photo of a red kite. When I got home I spotted that there was a falcon-like bird beyond it. I was thinking kestrel but I'm not sure. Any views? This was today in Surrey.

    large bee for ID

This was in our garden today. I'm not sure whether it's a queen or a worker but it was large.

    small spider

Can this one be IDed? I think I may have photographed its underside!

two bees - or not to bees (sorry)

    Any ID on these, please.

    garden spider

This one was about 10mm long. Any clues to ID would be appreciated.

    weed with beetles

Is this a member of the buttercup family? And a few beetles for any with good eyesight!

    three insects

Does anyone have any pointers, even to genus level, of what these three might be? Taken in my garden in Surrey today.
