    Kumlein's Gull??

Hi all, I went to see this bird which had been reported to me as a Glaucous Gull but, immediately on seeing it (although distant-ish), considered it to be an Iceland. Now, looking at my pics, I'm considering the possibility of it being a Kumlien's. All (helpful) comments gratefully received.

    Fieldguide recommendations?

Hi all, am looking for a decent 'insect' fieldguide that isn't padded out with odos and leps - anyone got any suggestions? I was recommended the Collins complete but it's bloody awful :C Thanks in advance,

    Calidrid confirmation

I'm not going daft am I? If I'm right, this is a first for the IOM... Apologies for a very poor shot taken in extreme high winds with a 500 f4 and 1.4t/c

    Northern India - Feb 2011

Apologies for the language... Lots more pix on my website. Anyone who knows me fairly well knows several things about me: I don’t like crowds (some might say “people”!) I’m not a lover of spicy foods – much preferring Italian and Chinese cooking. I hate jungles – too difficult for photography...

    "Nordic Jackdaw"

Found this today in Ramsey on the NE corner of the IOM, thought it might be of interest. Presumably of the race monedula.

Manx courts today fined a ''photographer'' £500 for activities contravening the Wildlife Act. To whit, setting up a hide to photograph Hen Harriers at the nest without a license. Congratulations to all concerned in getting the conviction. I expect more details will be available online tomorrow...

    RFI - Southwest Poland

Hi All, I may have the opportunity for a week's birding in south-west Poland, but haven't really found much gen online - most of the main sites appear to be at 'the top end' of the country. Can anyone help with sites to visit, say a couple of hours sw of Krakow? Cheers in advance,

    Arctic Tern plumage

Hi everyone, for the last 4 years a bird has spent the summer in what appears to be 1st Summer plumage (obviously it's not the same bird) in and around my local Arctic Tern colony. From memory, these are the only times I have encountered the species in this plumage and I was wondering how...

    Ring Ouzels - Haweswater

All, I've been asked to take a couple of friends to the UK so they can see Ring Ouzels (don't ask!). The ferry sailings (we're coming from the Isle of Man) give me two possible options which both involve going to Haweswater for Ring Ouzel and Golden Eagle. Basically we can be at Haweswater for...

    Help!! I can't decide...

I took these two shots today and the Mrs and I don't agree on which one to load to my website. My wife prefers shot "a" (she says it's a little bit different to the usual 'profile' shots) whereas I'm a traditionalist and prefer shot "b". Any critique also welcome. Shots taken with a Canon 1D...

This should be simple, but it isn't...

I've tried numerous ways to elicit reaction from South African 'experts', but it seems like no-one will commit to even dipping their toes in the water. Can one of you guys take a look and comment please? http://www.simplybirding.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3131&p=10214 Cheers,

    Llys-y-fran shrike

Has anyone noticed that the photos of the grey shrike at Llys-y-fran posted on Surfbirds and Birdguides show it to be a very dark bird. Further to this I wrote to the photographer (Richard Gordon Smith) and he sent me some more photos of the bird, one of which appears to show the white on the...

    3 Calidrids for identification comments

All, these 3 photos were taken last week on the Atlantic coast of Florida (Merritt Island to be precise). I know what I think they are, but your opinions as to what (and why) they are would be greatly appreciated. There may be 1 species or 2 species involved. Thanks in advance.
