    Interesting Tree at Football Ground

I was at a football match at a ground in the Kent countryside yesterday. In one corner, just outside the pitch perimeter, was was looked like a very old and interesting tree. I took a picture of it and have attached it to this post. I don't know my trees very well but could it be a Yew?

    Saving the spoon-billed sandpiper

This is a new DVD that is essentially a documentary of the 2011 expedition to Eastern Russia to collect SBS chicks for the captive breeding programme. I got it yesterday at the Birdfair and have just watched it. It is very good, the footage of the chicks is remarkable. I would recommend this...

    Bird Watching December 2008

Had a feeling of deja vu when I picked it up. A quick flip through my back issues of Birdwatch confirmed my suspicions! That aside, David Lindos column is excellent this month. I found his story really moving.

    North Norfolk Campsite

Hi, I'll be making my fist ever visit to North Norfolk next weekend. I'll be camping so has anybody got a recommendation for a decent site? Looking at the maps there is a few around Fakenham which seem handy. I'd rather go on a recommendation though. Thanks.

    This months Birdwatch (Awful Pic)

I would warn anyone who hasn't seen this months Birdwatching mag that possibly the most hideous pic of a poor bird that has been attacked by a Peregrine is on page 29. I caught a glance of it earlier and quickly turned over. I never want to see it again. I'm even going to staple the pages...

    RSPB Reserve Acquisition Policy

The RSPB have just announced that they have bought land for a new reserve at Canvey Island in Essex. I haven't been counting but just lately they seem to be spending huge sums on purchasing more and more reserves. I'm sure the rate of acquisition must be about the highest in their history. Now...

Advice needed. Robin nested in car grille.

At work we have a compound where pool vehicles are kept. One of them is a Land Rover Discovery and a Robin has decided to nest inside the grille. We only noticed this because we saw him/her going in with food. We think we can keep the vehicle from being used for a while and I see from BWPC...

    Birdfair Dates Clash

Went to my first Birdfair last year and loved it. Found the lectures particulary interesting. Just been booking my hotel for this years and I have noticed that the dates clash with the 24th Ornithological Congress in Germany. Since this conference seems to be the conference to go to for...

    Persecution in the Peak District

The RSPB have released a report on persecution in a part of the Peak District. I was fuming when I read it. The persecution seems to be well organised up there. Whoever it is (as if we didn't know....) are even killing badgers! Here is the link to the web page...

    Cold Day at RSPB Dungeness

Went to RSPB Dungeness for the first time for almost a year today. Flipping freezing it was! Was pleasantly surprised to see a new visitor centre almost completed. I look forward to my next visit to see it all working. Saw a few species I hadn't seen before. There were quite a few smew (male...

    Farne Island Info Needed

I'm going upto Cumbria for a fortnight on Saturday and I'm wondering whether to take a trip across to the east coast and visit The Farne Islands. I've found a web site with the boats on but it doesn't mention the price which is important! Probably be a week day when I travel if that makes any...

14 million quid for birds - Ouse Washes

It is reported that the government is going to make 14 million quid available, over 5 years, to buy land for birds around the Ouse Washes. The article doesn't mention the RSPB but I would have thought they would be involved?? Read all about it here

    Little Brown Birds

I've been birdwatching for about a year now. I have found it quite hard to learn how to recognise birds but I am now getting there with ducks and a few waders although had trouble with dunlin and knot the other week. Today I went around my local nature reserve which is becoming alive with...

    BBC Wildlife Magazine

I used to subscribe to this magazine but stopped some years ago. I remember reading that the BBC had farmed out production of this magazine to a sort of 'generic' magazine publisher to save money. The editor resigned IIRC. People thought it would go downhill. It was previously held in very high...

I only live a mile away from this spot but have never been much because of the cost. I finally got around to becoming a member today. Members have access to parts of the reserve others don't. RSPB Pulborough Brooks - 6/12/04

Today I made my first visit to RSPB Pulborough Brooks. I was amazed at the variety of different birds there. RSPB to buy land in Poland?
