    What irrates you when birding!

Sometimes I take a long walk up to the cemetery, especially Spring and Fall. But Spring is the best time, obviously. Anyhow, it's great, except when the obnoxious landscapers come with their noisy machines, sending all of the birds into hiding and taking away any sense of peace that existed!

Wanted : BIG bird seed hopper/dispensers

US'ers should check out Home Depot, they have those huge multi-tube feeders with baffle already attached. I didn't like it, found it too messy, but the birds loved it. Also attracted unwanted birds.

    Lard or Beef Suet??

Cornmeal and dried fruits are nice additions. Some people also add bacon drippings.

    Where do they go??

    What KC said! ;)

    Feeding advice please

All new birdfeeding people get so impatient. 8-PWe have discussed here many times that you need to give it time. Birds will find and eat from your feeder eventually.

Buying Birdfood in Bulk to save money.

Obviously, it depends where you live. We have a store here called Ocean State Job Lot which sells a 50 lb bag of sunflower for $25. (Used to be less than $20!!) Lowe's has decent prices, $15 for a 20 lb bag, I think it was. We also have Christmas Tree Shop, which sells mixed seed and...

Storing Food Outdoors - Waterproof, Airtight, Squirrelproof Ideas?

Metal bins work well as far as keeping rodents out, as they cannot chew through. But they will eventually rust. Also, if you have bears and other larger, stronger wildlife around, they will get into the bins. Supposedly there are plastic bear-proof bins, which have screw-on lids, but again -...

    Nuthatch Question

I find they prefer the nut feeder, but they will also take sunflower seeds. They're rather quick as far as visits go, so if you hardly ever see one, don't think they never visit. Also, I have noticed that they are very quiet this summer, whereas before they used to announce their presence...

    Grackle problem

I have come to accept that the grackles are greedy, devouring birds. I have stopped minding their presence, as the alternatives are having monk parakeets and starlings swarm feeders instead, and I'd simply rather see native species at my feeders than non-native. Grackles seem to be nomadic on...

    Brazil Nuts

My birds LOVE LOVE LOVE brazil nuts. I mix raw virginia peanuts and brazil nuts in the nut feeder, they cannot get enough, I'm gonna go broke!! Titmice, chickadees, woodpeckers, nuthatches, all love it.

    Feeders at a great height

I live on the third floor and my feeders are extremely successful. They are just outside my kitchen window, hung on long decorative planter hooks. Make sure there are no large perching areas where large birds can gather. DO NOT USE FEEDERS WITH LARGE PLATFORMS. Use the long slender ones or...

    Sparrow Problems

The house sparrows are horrendous and harrassing. The only thing you can hope for is to see birds of prey around - they love to eat sparrows. I have 2 feeders outside of my window, and when I am home I will bang on the window to chase them away. As for the feeders out in the yard - they...

    Nuthatches

Over the weekend I removed my air conditioners, thus allowing me access to the long tube nut feeder. I filled it with fresh nuts and have seen all of the regulars PLUS...FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER...RED BREASTED NUTHATCH. Adorable.

    Caged feeders -- squirrel proof?

Funny stuff. I'm glad it works for you. However, just for argument's sake, I really don't think the squirrels have any problem with the exertion part. After all, they have nothing better to do all day! ;) :-O I think they stop trying only when they feel their lives are in danger.

    Upside Down Suet Feeders

OK, I cannot help with the starlings and grackles, but I can tell fellow sparrow-haters that I have successfully chased them away from the suet. It was by accident, actually, that I decided to use a suet feeder with more narrow, rectangular openings rather than the square-type, which is the...

Red Pepper Flakes as squirrel deterrent at your feeders

Good to know! Thanks for the tip. I think I considered the moth ball solution many moons ago but never tried it. I don't have cats, but I do know that when my dog was alive, we NEVER had squirrel problems!!!!

Red Pepper Flakes as squirrel deterrent at your feeders

This is one of the dumbest urban legends I have ever heard.

    Nuthatches

They were a regular last winter but disappeared for most of the warmer weather. They have just now returned, for about a full week. As has been stated, they love the nuts and suet.

    Upside Down Suet Feeders

'Round these parts, the house sparrows are vicious and regularly chase off most other birds, including downies, from feeders, except for the birds much larger than they, like blue jays.

    Upside Down Suet Feeders

An update. You have to see the fights that go on over this single suet feeder! The chickadees have screaming fights with the woodpeckers and other chickadees. The downies fight amongst themselves and the aformentioned chickadees. This morning I saw two blue jays pecking at each other over...

    which seed is best.

Sunflower hearts only seem expensive. When you think about it, when you buy regular sunflower seed in shell, you're paying for shell poundage. Hulled, you're paying for pure seed.

    Caged feeders -- squirrel proof?

I find the most important factor with cages is grid size. If the squares are large enough for their stank little heads to fit, then they will get to it. My squirrel success story is a 7 foot 2-hook black iron garden pole, with a baffle underneath the feeders. It is placed remotely enough...

tube feeders, blue jays and cardinals?

I find that it's more about head size than anything. Most birds can figure out how to use almost any feeder, but if their heads are too big for the squirrel-proof grids, they're out of luck, and that's sad, cos then you're feeding house sparrows, and who wants to feed them?? (I've seen DY...

    Suet in the summer?

I have it year round for the woodpeckers. But the chickadees and titmice eat it as well. In fact, this year I have seen blue jays and cardinals on it as well. And unfortunately, the house sparrows.

    Upside Down Suet Feeders

This is my main problem as well - the house sparrows are downing suet like crazy this summer. I can't stand those freakin birds. I put out sunflower and they hog it, along with the monk parakeets. By the time the blue jays and cardinals come along, the feeder is empty. I had a suet house...
