    Lagoa dos Salgados

We were there yesterday. There were several cars at the western end and the track gave the appearance of being well-used, which is not surprising as there is no barrier to driving and it is the shallow end that has the most birds. The water level was higher than one might like with little shore...

    European Stork

GPS/GSM data loggers were fitted to 13 adult and 9 juvenile White Storks in Portugal as part of a PhD project based at University of East Anglia and co-supervised by the BTO. This study ran from November 2012 to March 2014. It is reported that “none of the adult storks migrated and two of the...

Yes, plenty of Bluethroats here throughout the winter.

    Steppes Alentejo Portugal 14-11-2013

Last saw N. Wheatear here in the Eastern Algarve on the 12th. There was a single Golden Plover here in Tavira on 31st October (which we couldn't make into anything else) but none since. They are very late arriving.

    Lagoa dos Salgados

Not really a 'shock' decision but an extremely disappointing one: http://www.algarvedailynews.com/news/468-salgados-development-permission-granted-in-shock-decision

Sagres - autumn migrants seen 2013

Several hundred Griffons moving east past Tavira today so the Sagres birds have presumably started to leave.

    Slender-billed Gull confirmation. Algarve

There are currently around 200 Slender-billed Gulls in the Eastern Algarve. The species was removed from the Portuguese rarities list several years ago and the numbers seen here continue to increase.

    Flamingo Ring Alentejo Portugal

Bert My guess is that it is a bird from Punta de la Banya but you can report details to [email protected] It looks to me that the ring number is X | NFA with a bar after the X. I suggest that you send the photograph with your report. Peter

    Ourique area - small report

Although there is no reference on www.cr-birding.org to a colour-ringing project in the CV area involving European Rollers, at least some of the birds are carrying rings, which suggests that someone might be carrying out some research! It would be interesting to have details. Perhaps it's...

    Ourique area - small report

Hi Gonçalo I'm sure you're right and probably there are multiple factors combining. In Europe, changing farming methods and a decline in the availability of large insects will no doubt be part of the story but there is also the question of what is happening to them during the winter. It just...

    Ourique area - small report

Simon, I agree entirely with your comments about Rollers. I wonder whether the fact that they return much later than the Lesser Kestrels means that they are simply losing out to the increasing LKs for nest sites. As you say. lots of high points around the area but one of our favourites now has...

    avesdeportugal.info website - English version

Unfortunately, the circular walk around the Cerro do Bufo section of the Castro Marim reserve is no longer permitted. There is a public track around the outside of the site which takes you left from the saltworks gate all the way to the N122 between Castro Marim and Vila Real. Do not enter the...

    Good-bye to Lagoa dos Salgados?

Time will tell, Simon and, of course, I would like to think you're right to accept all those assurances. However, there are a lot of issues involved and this is not the place for you and I to be debating them.

    Good-bye to Lagoa dos Salgados?

You really believe all that, Simon? I wish I could. As for urgently raising the water level, how many nests will be flooded when this happens?

    Good-bye to Lagoa dos Salgados?

This report this morning in the Algarve Daily News makes depressing reading. That the Portuguese can allow this to happen at the same time as promoting birdwatching tourism shows how little they understand or care for their environment.

    Algarve-Early May

Of course the introduction of tolls here has been a fiasco and I used the word 'solved' with my tongue firmly in my cheek. However, for the tourist the tolls will be a relatively small part of the total cost of visiting Portugal. What needs to be simple and straightforward is the method of...

    Algarve-Early May

We are promised that the chaos surrounding tolls on the A22 will soon be solved: http://algarvedailynews.com/news/6277-tolls-problems-will-be-solved-by-the-end-of-the-month We would, of course, prefer that they were scrapped! Peter http://www.algarvebirders.com

    Going to Tavira...

The price of petrol in the Algarve is now close to 1.70 Euros per litre and tolls are now in place on the A22 motorway. If you're staying in or close to Tavira you might want to consider hiring a guide who is based there. It will almost certainly be less expensive.

    Albufeira Area - August 2011

Pepe I can't find reference to a previous record of Egyptian Goose in Portugal. Probably the Portuguese Rarities Committe would like to have details. There is some variance of opinion about the new hide at Castro Marim with many people taking the view that it has been poorly sited, facing...

    Portugal 26th May to 2nd June 2011

Wherever you stay in the Algarve, you’ll need to do some travelling to see the full range of available species. We would agree with Digbert; we chose Tavira as our base because of its geographical position, roughly equidistant from Cape St Vincent, the Castro Verde area and Doñana and because...

    Sandpiper Both ?

Vilamoura Spotted Sandpiper Simon I emailed Ivan Ellison, the finder of the Vilamoura bird, last October urging a formal submission to the CPR. Apparently the photographs were posted on Birdguides as a Common Sandpiper and only identified as Spotted some time after the event and way too late...
