    Corncrake or Pheasant?

On the balance of probabilities I would say an Ocean Sunfish nesting in the eaves of his house is more likely.

    Corncrake or Pheasant?

Forget all this science. It’s not a Corncrake. Sorry to be so blunt about it.

    Birdguides new system

I'm involved in systems development and when launching something new people always want to hark back to what they know, irrespective of whether it was actually better or not. Take some time to play around with the functionality and you'll figure it out, presumably in the same way you figured the...

    Birdguides new system

I suspect most of the concerns are about natural human resistance to change and/or not quite knowing how to do stuff properly. Play around with it, figure it out, recognise that the people that run the site know what they're doing.

    Amazing Great Spotted Woodpecker photo!!

I don't think you're missing anything. The general theme is that the unusual colouration makes this a particularly attractive looking bird. And I concur !

    Long staying rarities

Everything that I twitch in a hurry seems to hang around forever afterwards. Conversely, everything I don't go for in a hurry disappears quickly.

    UK- odd bird in garden

My first impression too. It resembles the long staying individual from last year. I would be interested to know where the photo was taken. If it was in South Devon it could well be the 2010 East Prawle bird relocating.

    Eyebrowed Thrush in Norolk

Does anybody seriously believe this bird is real ? It just sounds such a bag of bollox.

    Long Tailed Duck?? UK

Looks like a Mandarin to me Lee. They are relatively common in the Thames area to the west of London & Windsor. Long-tailed Duck is more of a coastal species and they are uncommon in the south east.

Seawatching at Porthgwarra this weekend (Sat 16th July)

I've just had a look at the forecasted seawatching conditions for this coming Saturday (16th July) in SW Cornwall and they look ideal for Porthgwarra. Similar conditions last weekend saw multiple Cory's Shearwater, Pomarine Skuas & Storm Petrel, several Great Shearwater and a semi-lingering...

Bah, beat me to it. I seem to remember you fighting a lone battle towards the end on that one Jane. How about Monday Brown Flycatcher at Buckton last year & post 8pm Royal Tern in Llandudno a few years back. Has [first] Saturday Rainham Slaty-Backed Gull been taken yet ? Alan Coleman

Wouldn't cross the road for ...?

Black Duck must surely be the number one. Although I am planning on driving up from Preston to Loch Sunart over the weekend to try my luck on the one that's been there recently so perhaps I'm contradicting myself. Other contenders....I was underwhelmed by the White-winged Scoter the other week...

    Awkward Species (British)

They're not really bogey birds as such, just difficult to connect with for whatever reason (luck, geographical location, availability when one does turn up etc). Definitely agree with Kentish Plover. The Leicestershire bird last year was the closest (from the North West) twitchable one in the...

    Awkward Species (British)

I've been birding for over ten years now and am still missing the following, despite a fair amount of effort seawatching and responding to sightings.... Great Shearwater Cory's Shearwater Caspian Tern (nightmare mobile one day species I haven't even been close to; anybody else suffering with...

Am I going MAD !!!!!! Crested Tits

This may sound patronising but I would suggest your bird was a Coal Tit. They look superficially similar to Crested Tit and the white nape patch may resemble a crest if not seen well.

    Highland birding trip imminent

This should be the number to contact the skipper of the MV Stardust (07798-743858). It runs from Portree Harbour. Not guaranteed great views but you will probably get to see a White-tailed Eagle on the cliffs if nothing else. If it does come over the boat it's magnificent ! You are likely to...

Seawatching at Porthgwarra over the bank holiday weekend

Hi all, I am heading down to Cornwall (Porthgwarra and possibly Pendeen) for some seawatching this coming weekend. Does anybody have any tips for me as it's my first time in the area. Where specifically do I go on the headland (at both sites) ? What time should I arrive each morning ? What...
