Just a heads up, was lucky to get a pic of one on private land, near the top of a Pembrokeshire hill late August, couple of days after a Bonellis Skokholm and a Melodious Bardsey. No sign the following day. 2nd for UK I believe, would've preferred a bird but hey musnt grumble. 🙂🦋🐦

    Old Chinese bird illustration

Sometimes in old paintings of birds, it can look like a bird is actually an amalgamation of 2 or more species. This one, in an illustrated Tao Te Ching, looks to have been influenced by White Eyed River Martin to a fair degree.. 🤔🦆

    First birdsong!

I had a nice surprise this crisp, sunny morning - a Mistle Thrush in full song. Well, i guess they can be starting to nest build in 4 months or so! Funnily enough, Mistle Thrush isn't a bird i often see around here, and yet the habbo is perfect - horse fields and sports fields with adjacent...

    Small Blue Cardiganshire/Ceredigion

On the distribution maps, the coast of Ceredigion is shown for Small Blue. I've always wanted to see one ever since i was a kid but haven't yet (in the UK anyway) and would be really grateful if anyone could give me an idea of where to look in that area - hopefully there'll be a second...

    Prescription binoculars

Anyone ever heard of these? A member of the public (non-birder) told me today that you can get binoculars that are made to your eye prescription. I think they are probably just getting confused with the diopter mechanism which adjusts for non-20/20 vision (can't really see any need for...

    poss day flying moth? Syria

I had a poss day flying moth in an area of extensive mountainous Mediterranean coniferous forest in Syria (Al Fronloq), they were in the open along rides and firebreaks. It was towards the end of April and daytime temps were getting into the low 20's deg C. At the time i was convinced they were...

    Rough Legged Hawk Greenland

Hi, a birding acquaintance photographed a Rough Legged Hawk on the coast of Western Greenland while on a cruise to/from Nunavat. Does anybody know how frequently this species makes it there? It seems they breed on either Baffin or Ellesmere Islands, depending on the source. Thanks in advance.

Hi, i'm going to be visiting the Picos de Europa for a few days from Oct 16th. Does anyone have a suggestion of a nice place to stay? Preferably friendly & not too expensive. Ferry Stockholm to St Petersburg?

    Lumix DMC-FZ72

I'm going to get a camera to help me ID birds, so i assume a big zoom is useful. I'm not a tog, and don't need anything fancy therefore, and not got a huge budget - up to c. £400 max, but don't need to spend that much if not necessary. A mate suggested i get the latest Lumix; i'm not sure if...

    Abietinus Chiffchaff wing length

I assume that the range of wing lengths of collybita and abietinus largely overlap. I am wondering if an abietinus with a wing length at the top of their range, will be longer-winged than any collybita. I'm not a ringer, but am curious as to whether this would enable the longest-winged abietinus...

Article about Gannets caught as food off Mauritania by Chinese trawlers

    Coquet Island on Radio 4

Just listened to an interesting and entertaining short prog about the above, including a Puffin Piano where curious Puffins investigate an electric keyboard and generate sounds. All part of raising awareness of marine seabirds to a wider audience. A recording was sent to the local school, who...

    Woodpigeons

A friend who was part of the migration count in the Pyrenees tells me that there were 1,400,000 woodpigeons in three hours over two stations on Oct 31st.. I saw the odd report of Woodpigeon on Birdguides in the first few days of Nov which I assumed were to do with high counts at vis mig sites. I...

    Verreauxs Eagle

Hi, does anyone know how possible it is to see Verreauxs Eagle in Egypt? I heard a rumour that they have bred near Taba - not sure if this is related to the Ullmann (2002) article about rediscovering them in Sinai (in Birding World) or not as i haven't read it. How possible are they in the SE of...
