    Nettle Tree Butterfly

Found one of these today at a very accessible location in Italy in the Valle dei Mulini between Garda and Costermano, near Lake Garda, Italy. Photo of screen on back of camera. It didn't stay long enough to get a better shot

    Olympus 150- 400mm Lens Announced

Finally! Is it too late to save the system? Specification certainly seems spot-on for an all-round pro-quality wildlife lens with minimum focus of 1.3m, 150mm to 500mm built in plus 1.4x or 2x converter compatibility. 1875gms weight (lens only) and bird-recognition AF coming for the EM1X...

    Ringed Grey Wagtail

This Grey Wagtail has been feeding in the same area since January at least. It's close to a much-used public footpath and reasonably tolerant of people passing, but it's not easy to get any closer than this (photo is full-frame shot) once you start to concentrate on it! No chance of erecting a...

    Hawfinches at Mickleham

100+ Hawfinches reported today at Juniper Bottom behind Box Hill. Must have been a wonderful sight - any comments, anyone?

    First Butterfly of 2013

Trudging along a muddy footpath on the edge of a rain-drenched field this morning I was amazed to disturb a Peacock butterfly from the vegetation at the side of the field. The sun was (finally!) shining at the time but, even so, it was totally unexpected after all the wet weather we've had recently.

    First Butterfly of the Year

A Small White in home yesterday - newly-emerged by the look of it. The caterpillar must have 'jumped ship' from a vegetable in the kitchen some time last year and found a nice hidden spot to pupate!

    Turquoise Blue, France?

Not the sharpest of shots, but the only one I got! No upperwing details, but is there enough here to identify this - I'm thinking Turquoise Blue, Plebicula dorylas. Location: the limestone gorge of Canyon d'Alzou, Rocamadour, Lot, Midi-Pyrenees, France, August 5th 2010. Many thanks for taking a...

    Austrian Orchid for ID

Can anyone help, please, with the identification of the orchid below? It was near Hinterglemm, Austria at a height somewhere around 1300-1400m in a rather damp area. The leaf is shown in the first shot - the rather dark one towards the bottom right of the photo. July 24th 2009. Thanks.

    Leicestershire and Rutland Birding/Local Patches

Many other counties/areas have threads for general information on birds and birding sites, so I thought I'd start one for Leicestershire and Rutland, which are recorded together as vice-county 55 in official reports. The website for The Leicestershire and Rutland Ornithological Society (LROS)...

    Moth IDs Please

There's often a few moths on the outer walls at work in the morning but I haven't got a comprehensive ID book to sort them out! Any help with identifying the moths below would be much appreciated. The first was taken several days ago and the others were this morning. Many thanks, Adey

    Italian Orchid IDs Please!

My flower book doesn't cover southern Europe so I'm not sure of the ID of the following orchids. Some look similar to those we get (Fragrant Orchid and Red Helleborine, for instance) but there may be very similar but different species further south, so could anyone have a look at these please...

    Hairstreak ID?

Any ideas on the ID of this Hairstreak taken recently (June 25th) in Spain? I was staying at Tossa de Mar in NE Spain and there were many Ilex Hairstreaks, Satyrium ilicis, close to the town in the tree-covered hillsides and all seemed to have at least a hint of hairstreak on the forewings...

    Origin of a Wood Warbler

Wood Warbler has never been a common bird here in Leicestershire and in recent years reports have, quite literally, been down to single figures. Carl Baggott and I were, thus, very pleased to find one on one of our regular local patches, Croft Hill, on Saturday April 22nd. A couple of years ago...

    Pheasant ID?

Any ideas on this darkly attractive Pheasant - more compact in size than Common Pheasant.Coming to a feeder on woodland edge this morning. Weather very gloomy at the time, still raining. Exposure was only 1/50th sec at F5.6 even with ISO 1600. I was leaning on the car's window frame to get...

    Return of the Albino Blackbird

I think a thread that I started on this bird last winter was lost in a BF 'crash' but a photo is still in my gallery from last February: http://www.birdforum.net/pp_gallery/showphoto.php/photo/40533/sort/1/cat/500/page/12 What must be the same bird has returned in recent weeks, to my garden. It...

    RFI: Gitzo Tripod and Head

After yet another Velbon tripod has come close to being life-expired I've decided to look around for a higher quality model to replace it (when funds allow!). I've decided to get a Gitzo carbon fibre 'pod and I've more or less homed-in on the the G1227 model - any comments on the 'Rapid' versus...

    Dragonfly ID Pointers

Following on from a comment in a previous thread, here's a place to collect any useful pointers for both ID features and names of different body parts. I'll start with some features of male Migrant Hawker Aeshna mixta which causes a few ID problems each year at about this time. It shows the...

    Erebia Ringlet Species for ID

I saw several Erebia species butterflies on holiday in Haute-Savoie, France recently and most are giving me ID problems! The one below is an interesting example. There appear to be 3 possibles with this pattern of 'eyes' where there are 3 large and 2 distinctly smaller eyes on the upper...

    Orchids in the Midlands

In order not to hijack other threads such as 'Kent Orchids,' ;) I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread on any orchid topics in the Midland counties. To start with, anybody got any thoughts on the one pictured below, photographed this morning at Elmesthorpe Plantation near...

    BBC 'Countryfile' Photographic Competition

Here's a link to this year's competition: http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/environment/programmes/countryfile/photocomp_2005.shtml After some comments in this forum on last year's winning entry let's hope one of Birdforum's leading lensmen/women can show them how to really do it!

    Cuckoo Day

April 23rd is, of course, St. George's Day and Shakespeare's birthday (and supposedly the day he died) but I reckon that it's also 'Cuckoo Day.' An old gentleman always repeated to me, at this time of year (every year!), the words of an old farmer as told to him many years before: 'You'll...
