    Crossbill, Speyside

I know that they can't really be ID'd for certain without a sonogram of their calls (I didn't have the sense to record them) or a DNA test. I was just after peoples opinions of this Crossbill in case I have missed anything. Thanks!

    Juv Gull, Northumberland

Whilst looking for an Iceland Gull at the QE II country park in Northumberland I noticed the Gull below. The primaries looked paler that the other young Gulls present (they look darker in the photos than they did at the time) and the pink bill with a dark tip also stood out. It was bigger than...

    Golden y. But Which One?

I'd be grateful for opinions on these two moths. Shots 2 & 3 are of the same moth caught two nights ago, shot one is of a moth I caught last July.

    Latest from Northumberland

I'm just going to keep adding moths that I'm sure about to this thread rather than keep starting new threads. Here are some I caught the other night. From the marking you can still make out on the first one, I think it is either a Campion or a Lychnis but may be to worn to ID? The second one...

    Two from Northumberland

These two have got me a little bit stumped. I think the first one could be a Mottled Rustic, but I haven't got a clue about the second one. As always I would be very grateful for any help.

    A Very Worn Moth

Any ideas? I thought Square-spot Rustic but it's a little bit early for them. Any help will be gratefully received.

Long or Short Billed Dowitcher, FL

These photos were taken of a flock of Dowitchers feeding on the shore at Fort de Soto, Florida. Can anyone please confirm if they are Long or Short Billed or both?

    Flycatcher, Florida

I saw this flycatcher at Merritt Island on the 25th Oct. My first thought was Least Flycatcher due to small size and bill shape/colour. Can anyone confirm or correct my ID or will this just have to go down as an Empidonax sp?

    Dark Morph Buteo

Whilst visiting Circle B Bar Reserve in Central Florida on the 23rd Oct I noticed a dark morph Buteo kettling with the vultures and other raptors. Being new to birding in Florida I just assumed it was a dark morph Red-tailed Hawk and it wasn't until I was reading my Sibley Guide that night...

    First time in Florida

Hi everyone. I will be in Orlando from 17th October for two weeks visiting the mouse. One of my targets is Ruby-Throated Hummingbird and looking on eBird Bok Tower gardens seems like a good spot for them. I was just wondering if any of you locals would recommend Bok Tower or are there any...

    A Tatty Micro

Unfortunately I don't have a field guide for micros, I usually use the Northumbria moths website to ID them but I just can't seem to find this one.

    Lychnis??

I'm not sure if this is a worn Lychnis but that's the closest I could find in my field Guide.

    3 from last night

I caught these three last night. I originally thought the Pug was a Juniper Pug, but it is a bit early. From the photo I now think it could be a worn Green Pug? I'm really struggling with 2 and 3 I think 2 could be a worn Hebrew Character and three I just haven't got a clew. Any help will be...

    Redpoll Northumberland

Whilst at a friends house in Northumberland, I spotted this Redpoll high in the trees. Redpolls are a bit of an interest of mine and as soon as I saw this bird it just looked a bit out of the ordinary. The streaking on the flanks looked very fine and the general look of the bird was just wrong...

    Moth ID help

I am a complete novice at this moth ID'ing and I am now finding out that I have a rubbish field guide. So any help in ID'ing the attached moths will be gratefully received. They were all caught in Northumberland and I have been using the Northumberland Moths website to help ID them but still...

    Moth ID help

I found this small moth in my garden this morning and I was wondering if anyone can help with an ID. You can't see from this picture but it had white under wings. I find IDing moths really difficult so any help will be gratefully received.

    Casual birding in the Algarve

I have just returned from the Algarve after a week’s family holiday with a bit of casual birding thrown in. We rented Villa Dois Irmaos just outside of Tavira at a place called Santo Estevao and hired a Corsa from Zitautos at Faro Airport for the week. We arrived late afternoon on Saturday...

    Spanish Imperial Eagle sites

I’m planning a family holiday to the Algarve in November and I’m hoping to get a bit of birding in, whilst there. I was wondering if anybody knows of any sites for Spanish Imperial Eagle and Black Vulture, near to the border? We will be staying in Tavira and have a hire car, so I am prepared...

    Dodgy Moorhen or ...............? Minsmere.

This bird was being referred to as the crake at Minsmere on the 1st Sept. It was roughly the same size as a Moorhen. Any ideas? Sorry about the poor quality photos, but it was quite distant, back lit with a heat haze.

    White-winged Gull, Northumberland.

When I first spotted the Gull in photo 1 my initial thought was Glaucous Gull, but it was smaller than a Herring Gull and the same size as the two Iceland Gulls it was hanging around with. I would just like peoples opinions on this bird. I have posted a photo of an Iceland Gull for comparison.

    White-Tailed Eagles, Lochdon.

At Loch Garten last week, I was talking to a couple who told me that the White-Tailed Eagles at Lochdon had been disturbed by a photographer, trying to get photo's of the bird on the nest. Apparently making them desert the nest. Has anybody else heard anything about this? If so, this is a...
